Overview

CARRS-Q was pleased to present two seminars featuring Mr Jim Ouellet, an internationally recognised expert involving motorcycle crash investigations.

Mr Ouellet has been involved in the detailed investigation, reconstruction and analysis of motorcycle accidents since 1975, when he began work on the watershed "Hurt Study" at the University of Southern California. The study involved on-scene investigation of 900 motorcycle accidents in Los Angeles to determine how and why each crash occurred in order to identify casues and countermeasures for motorcycle accidents and injuries.

From 1997 to 2002 Mr Ouellet helped organise, train and oversee another motorcycle accident research project funded by Honda at Chulalongkorn University of Bangkok and involving nearly 1100 crashes in Thailand. Mr Ouellet has taught motorcycle accident investigation and reconstruction, helmet damage analysis and injury analysis to a variety of groups including researchers, police investigators, engineers, graduate students and attorneys.

CARRS-Q Seminar Series

Seminar 1: Lessons from motorcycle crash studies in Thailand and Los Angeles
This seminar was held on 26 October 2007. In this presentation Mr Ouellet compared motorcycle crashes in Thailand and Los Angeles, including factors such as leg injuries, crash causes, alcohol-related crshes, collision avoidance and conspicuity, and share the lessons that we can take from his extensive investigations.

Seminar 2: Lower limb injuries in motorcycle crashes
This seminar was also held on 26 October 2007. In this second presentation, Mr Ouellet discussed orthopaedic injuries that occur in motorcycle crashes. His talk covered crash bars and leg injuries, the theory of providing a protective space around the legs, and appropriate and inappropriate strategies for injury reduction in motorcycle crashes.
