"Younger Driver Licensing: Tales from Near and Far"

On Thursday 13 July 2006, the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) hosted an International Symposium "Younger Driver Licensing: Tales from Near and Far" at Parliament House, Brisbane.

Overview
Young and experienced drivers aged 17-24 years are among Queensland's most at-risk road user groups. This age group accounts for about 30% of all fatalities on Queensland roads, yet represents only 11% of the population. The same pattern of higher crash and injury risk is found in other Australian states and territories and in all developed countries.

The keynote speaker was Dr Allan Williams, one of the world's foremost authorities on graduated licensing approaches to improving young driver safety. Dr Williams is an Adjunct Professor at CARRS-Q and recently retired from his position of Chief Scientist and Senior Vice President (Research) at the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Arlington, Virginia, where he conducted a wide variety of highway safety research with emphasis on alcohol and other drugs, occupant restraint use and young drivers. He has published widely in this area and has a long-standing interest in young driver licensing practices and research in Australia and New Zealand. In 1997, he was a recipient of the Widmark Award presented by the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS) which recognises outstanding and meritorious accomplishement in the field of alchohol, drugs and traffic safety.
