What is an Occupational Trainee?

An Occupational Traineeship (Internship) is designed for students from overseas institutions who want to come to Australia temporarily to further develop their skills in their current area of tertiary study or field of expertise.

At CARRS-Q we work with our Interns to help them develop their research leadership and development skills, and enhance existing practical research skills.

In conjunction with the intern and their supervisor from their home institution we develop a training plan with the primary objective being to advance the learning and understanding of the intern.

Being an intern at CARRS-Q is an excellent international experience in a very different country for a French student. It is also very interesting to be able to keep an eye on the research projects because the evolution of road safety - and especially the decreasing road toll - looks quite similar in Australia and France despite the very different road networks. - Gabriel Ludington, Student Intern, France

What are the expectations of an Occupational Trainee at CARRS-Q?

The main responsibilities of a CARRS-Q Occupational Trainee are:

  • To undertake tasks in an independent but consultative way;
  • Manage the research timeline;
  • Report on progress at least weekly;
  • Attend campus for the hours agreed on by the CARRS-Q supervisor and the intern;
  • CARRS-Q will cover the cost of office supplies (including a desk, desktop PC and landline telephone), however the Intern is responsible for all other costs associated with the internship including food, lodging, medical expenses and the roundtrip travel costs;
  • The Intern must abide by the workplace health and safety requirements of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), CARRS-Q.
